The Three Founders of Crocs

Crocs was founded by three friends from Boulder, Colorado: Scott Seamans, Lyndon Hanson and George Boedecker Jr. They shared an interest in outdoor life and boating, and they saw potential in a light, water-friendly shoe that would not slip on wet decks.

Together, they launched the brand in 2002. Their first model was called “the Beach”, and it was aimed at people who spent time on boats and near water.

Where Did the Design Come From?

The founders did not create the original foam clog completely from scratch. The Beach was based on a clog design made by Foam Creations, a company in Quebec City, Canada. The founders saw what the shoe could become and built a brand around it.

In June 2004, Crocs bought Foam Creations. The deal gave Crocs control over the special foam material that would later be known as Croslite™. Our guide to what Croslite is explains why this material became so important to the brand.

How the Idea Took Off

The founders first showed their shoes at a boat show in Florida in 2002. Boaters liked how light and comfortable they felt, and how easily they handled water. Early pairs sold out, which gave the young company the confidence to grow.

Imagine standing on a boat dock that summer. Most people wear deck shoes or sandals, but a few visitors are trying a strange, colourful clog with holes on top. They are light, they do not slip, and water drains straight out. That practical first impression helped the idea spread.

From Three Friends to a Public Company

Crocs grew quickly. In 2006, the company went public on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Over the following years, it expanded into new styles, colours and markets around the world. Our guide on when Crocs were invented walks through the timeline in more detail.

Today, Crocs, Inc. is a large footwear company based in Broomfield, Colorado. Our guide to Crocs Inc explains what the company looks like now.

Why the Founders’ Idea Still Matters

The founders focused on comfort and practicality, not fashion. That focus still shapes Crocs today. Even the most stylish collaborations keep the light, easy-to-clean qualities that made the first pairs popular with boaters.

If you want a fuller picture of the brand, our guide to what Crocs are covers its materials, styles and popularity.

Final Thoughts

Crocs began with three friends, a borrowed clog design and a belief that comfort mattered. Scott Seamans, Lyndon Hanson and George Boedecker Jr. turned that belief into one of the most recognisable shoe brands in the world.
